ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

FILM/"CADILLAC RECORDS" REVIEW: Variety has released the 1st review of the upcoming film, which charts the rise of Chess Records. The film stars Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, Beyonce Knowles, and Eamonn Walker. They said: "Approaching the blues with the enthusiasm of an overcaffeinated brass band, helmer Darnell Martin nonetheless makes some kind of music with the percolating '50s biopic "Cadillac Records" -- mostly because she mines a righteous, mythic sensibility out of the story of Leonard Chess, Muddy Waters and the birth of the Chicago blues. Jeffrey Wright's Waters is unforgettable, Eamonn Walker gives an unnerving performance as rival bluesman Howlin' Wolf, and Beyonce Knowles' Etta James should put bottoms in seats". The film is rated R and runs 108 minutes.
FILM/"MAMMA MIA" SETS A RECORD: "Mamma Mia!," already a theatrical hit in the UK, has become the fastest-selling DVD of all time in England. The musical sold 1.7 million units on Monday, its 1st day on release, breaking the day 1 record set by “Titanic,” which sold 1.1 million on its first day in 1998. The film is still hovering in the UK Top 15 Box Office chart. This past weekend, its 20th on release, it dipped 42% to take its cumulative total to $104.6 million.
BOOKS/BAD SEX PRIZE: Author Rachel Johnson has been named as the winner of this year's Bad Sex In Fiction Award for a passage in her novel "Shire Hell". The UK award is given to the passage considered to be the most redundant in an otherwise excellent novel. Johnson's winning passage includes the following lines: "I find myself gripping his ears and tugging at the locks curling over them, beside myself, and a strange animal noise escapes from me as the mounting, Wagnerian crescendo overtakes me. I really do hope at this point that all the Spodders are, as requested, attending the meeting about slug clearance...".

AVIATION NEWS BRIEFS

QANTAS 747 COLLISION: Two Qantas Boeing 747's collided on the tarmac last Tuesday, November 18, in Victoria, Australia. The jets were both at a facility in Victoria for repairs. The picture above, taken minutes after the collision, show that the wing of one aircraft had sheared into the other, ripping a hole in the plane's nose. The damaged plane is the same craft that was forced to make an emergency landing in Manila in July after an exploding gas bottle ripped a large hole in the fuselage. It was due to return to service within days. Although Qantas has downplayed the incident, aviation experts said that it could cost the Airline around $20m in revenue, both for the repairs, and for the having the aircraft out of service.

ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES Flight 404: The Boeing 757 was on service from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Tel Aviv, Israel, yesterday, November 25.
